Roland J. "Doc" Perlmutter, M.D. a Biography
R. J. was born and raised in Colorado. He attended grade school and high school in that state, then went on to the University of Denver to earn a B. A. Degree, followed by attending the University Colorado School of Medicine to earn an M. D. degree.
Doc knows the Colorado mountains very well because he once served as a surveyor of the area.
He served in the U. S. Army from 1941 to 1945 as a Medical Officer.
When R. J. was very young, he was given an Eastman Kodak 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 folding camera. He says he has been taking pictures ever since.
During his picture-taking years, he has been a member of three camera clubs: the El Dorado CC from 1955 to 1987, or so; the El Camino CC from 1970 to 1988; and the South Bay CC since 1989. The first two Clubs listed are not in existence any longer, something that has happened to several camera clubs.
He has been a contributing member of S4C, served on its Board of Directors, and earned a Distinguished Fellow honor from that group.
R. J. is proud of his 63 years of marriage to his wife, Ellen.
He also speaks with some pride of accomplishment when he announces that he was possibly the first camera club member to photograph the Maroon Bells in Colorado (in the snow, yet), then told other members about it. He likes to claim that all subsequent images taken there used HIS tripod holes.
Doc is known for his good landscape photography, his good sense of humor, and the quality of always having “a few words to say” when called to the podium at meetings. Those who are his friends know him as an all-around nice guy.
