August 11, 2003 - Showing of S4C Salon Prints
There were 45 persons in attendance at the Club meeting, four of whom were announced visitors, two of whom were spouses, and two others were visiting but not signed in as such.
A short meeting of the membership preceded the showing of the Salon prints. After the introduction of guests and various announcements, President Gutman distributed copies of the 2003-2004 SBCC Activity Schedule he has created and which shows the Programs and Competitions for the year, including adding Projected Digital competitions. (There was one major change in this schedule from the one distibuted at the Board of Directors Meeting on July 21; the competition on October 27 has been changed to a Program on Photography Techniques. Those with suggestions for this program should forward them to Program Chairperson, Jerry Evans.) The schedule distributed at this session includes two banquets, six programs, seven PT/PJ/Nature and Pictorial slide competitions, eight Print competitions, and seven Projected Digital competitions. (See the Calendar feature for a month-by-month listing.)
Next, Vice President Houston read a prepared statement entitled "Call for a Vote of Confidence". In that speech he indicated that the officers are dedicated to emphasizing digital in one-half of the Club's competitions, that opposition to this position is unacceptable, and that a Yes/No vote would tell the elected officers of club members' preferences. He indicated that a positive vote would retain the current officers, put a stop to the undermining efforts of a few, and no longer allow any of those few to speak for the Club without authorization. A printed ballot was distributed giving attending members two choices, "YES, I like the new direction taken by the officers" or "NO, I prefer the emphasis on slides". Ballots were collected and counted, showing YES - 23, NO - 9, and three abstentions, total of 35 votes, as counted by a Club member and later verified by another Club member. Guests and non-members were told not to vote.
The main program for the evening was the presentation of the Prints, both monochrome and color, from the S4C International Photography Salon, with entries from all over the world. The Salon includes both slides and prints. This year the membership was privileged to view a presentation of the 262 "accepted" prints from this Salon. Just under 31% of the 847 entries were judged as "accepted"; the others were rejected. When each print was shown, the title and the maker's name and country were announced. Here are the numbers of prints shown, by category: Commercial Color Prints (small) - 35; Small Self-made Color Prints - 37; Small Self-made Monochrome Prints - 32; Large Self-made Color Pirnts - 57; and Large Self-made Monochrome Prints - 101. Please note that the largest number was in self-made black and white prints. Special note should be made that two Club members had acceptances in this Salon; congratulations to Diane Cheney and to David Carriere. Many thanks to our own Helen Weinman who served as one of three judges for this Salon. And a special thanks to Richard Collier, who served as Salon Print Division Chairman and was responsible for the showing of the prints at this Club meeting. The responses received from many members about the showing of these winning prints were very favorable.
