Phil,this portarit color and lighting are pretty good, but I feel you might need to soften the girl's fave, especially on her cheek. Usually you always want to show young lady's smooth skin vs Man's or older people's.

I agree with you Tom, the skin should be smooth. A soft focus filter would do the job. Also you flash... either with a soft box, or indirect with a triflector. This will make that twinkle in her eyes stand out, it would also make those lips very moist looking.

Color balance on this photo is right on. Her eyes are on an angle with her head tilted, which gives the photo some interest. The focus is crisp and clear, and the exposure is percisely right.
Should the photographer choose to improve the photo now, a little softening might be applied in photoshop with a small amount of gaussian blur.. erasing the eyes and the lips and the tip of her nose.
With some practice at this photoshop technique it will be as beautifully pulled off as if you did use a filter when the shot was taken.
